Utica

On Tuesday morning, Joseph got some bad news from home, and was forced to suspend his TransAm trip temporarily and return to New York.  Thus, I am once again riding alone.

Perhaps to take my mind off my newfound soltitude, or perhaps because it puts me within striking distance of Illinois today, I put in 145 miles yesterday.   This is officially A Long Way.  I left at 7.30am, and pulled into my destination at 8.30pm, with a 1-hour time change along the way (yes, I’m officially on Central Time now!)

That said, the terrain was pretty friendly — mostly gently rolling hills can be almost coasted over.  The miles certainly flew by a lot faster than they were in the Appalachians!

I stayed the night in another Volunteer Fire Department, this time in Utica, Kentucky.  Volunteer Fire Departments are great, because they invariably let you sleep inside, and have a shower.   I hung out with a West-to-East-er, Josh, who had made it from Oregon to Utica in a mere 5 weeks — giving me hope that I might actually be able to finish this thing off by early August!
