Day 1 (really this time)

I left Yorktown, Virginia yesterday once again behind schedule. The ride from the car rental place to the start of the TransAmerica trail was more substantial than I had envisioned.  I also had some bike assembly difficulties that took a little while to resolve. Eventually, though, I made it off, and managed to get in the 60 miles to  the United Methodist Church  campground at a totally reasonable  7pm.

Sadly, I also somehow managed to misplace my tent poles along the way.  I’m not sure how this could have happened, only that I realized that they were missing about 5 minutes before pulling up on the church.  Luckily for me, the church actually allows bikers to sleep inside it.  I spent a highly engaging evening in the company of 2 school teachers and a school librarian: Judy, Julie ans Susie.  We played an outrageously long-lasting card game and stayed up a bit too late (10 is way past my bedtime,) and generally had a good time.  The ladies had a lot of pointers for how to survive at my next stop, which happens to be very close to their hometown.

The church people were also incredibly hospitable, driving me to and from the local store for supplies, and providing freshly baked cookies.  Apparently I am being prayed for now.   Hallelujah.
